The blue shaded areas (with crosslines) show the total contact area (left axis) and the red shaded areas (diagonal lines) show the medial cartilage to lateral cartilage ratio of contact area (right axes). The cartilage-to-cartilage contact area on the lateral side of the knee was close to zero in the FE models with 5–10% increased pre-strains in the MCL (at 40% to 90% of the stance phase). Thus, the medial to lateral contact area ratio goes out of range.
