Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) allows visualizing the mucosa with 1,000-fold magnification. Normal colonic crypts are round with a small and dark central lumen surrounded by fluorescein-containing vessels (left picture). In CLE, colonic adenomas are characterized by tubular-shaped and elongated crypts with loss of goblet cells and a thin and irregular lamina propria.
