Carcasses (bodies without ovaries) of flies contain a set of rRNA fragments overlapping with that in piwi mutant ovaries: A number of fragments are present not only in the transheterozygous piwi2/Nt ovaries (which are several lanes from the blot shown in Figure 1B), but also in control carcasses (exemplified by 5S rRNA on the left and 5.8S rRNA on the right). Fragments are designated by white arrows, mature rRNAs by black arrows. The same amount of RNA from the ovaries and carcasses was loaded on the lanes, the signal from miR-8 microRNA in the total carcass RNA is demonstrated at lower signal intensity.
