The piwi mutation induces a processing defect of Drosophila 2S rRNA orthologous to the 3′-end of eukaryotic 5.8S rRNA: In piwi mutants, precursors of 2S rRNA accumulate with approximate sizes of 60, 90, 120, and 150 n.
