Any type of stroke: ischaemic, hemorrhagic, carotid and vertebrobasilar stroke.
TIA and SAH excluded.

50 g glycerol in 500 ml saline i.v. over 2 hours + 16 mg dexamethasone i.m. for 7 days. |

Mortality at 7, 30 days. Neurological evaluation, coma and disability status scale at 7 and 30 days. |

Steroids were administered in treatment and in control group.
24 patients out of 93 considered had no CT scan. 30 randomised were excluded from the analyses: 7 had a SAH; 14 in glycerol + dexamethasone group and 9 in dexamethasone group discontinued the treatment. |
