The Highfield experiment with previous grass (G), arable (A) (both since 1949, in 50 × 7 m plots) and bare fallow (F) (since 1959, in adjacent land totalling c. 1400 m2) land uses, with superimposed current grass (black), arable (grey) and fallow (white) land uses. The experimental design comprises 9 treatments triplicated in 27 split-plots (3 previous × 3 current land uses × 3 field replicates). Plot numbers are given.
