Participants A medical follow‐up clinic at the Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio, TX (US). It serves as a primary care training facility. 1148 of 1722 patients enrolled in the clinic were included in the study. 90% of the patients were Mexican American and more than 95% were indigent. Patients were being followed for hypertension, diabetes or both. The number of included patients with only diabetes is not clear, but 315 patient with diabetes were included in the analyses and completed the 29 month trial (not clear which type of diabetes)
