Proteinuria measured every 2 wk throughout the duration of the study. A: sham rats had increased proteinuria when given nicotine in the drinking water, which was partially prevented by cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibition [*P < 0.05 vs. the Sham group; #P < 0.05 vs. sham-operated rats given nicotine (ShamNic group)]. B: the administration of nicotine worsened proteinuria in 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6Nx) rats but was prevented by COX-2 inhibition.
