Abundances of ARG, human gut (HG), and cow gut sequences in the Salinas Valley metagenomes compared to those in other environmental metagenomes. The box-and-whisker plots show the interquartile ranges for the abundances, with open dots indicating samples that exceeded 1.5× the interquartile range. The “upstream” metagenomes represent the seven more pristine control samples, i.e., three samples collected upstream from GABOSR, two collected upstream from TOWOSR, and two sites on the west side of the Salinas River that were farthest upstream from the rest of the sites (for more details, see main text and Fig. 1). The other environmental metagenomes (other env) included 3 river sediments, 2 agricultural soils, 1 permafrost soil, and 2 river water samples from the Kalamas and Ganges Rivers.
