Mixes patients in a randomized trial with cross‐over design and non randomized patients. Not exactly a randomized trial. Only 10 of 16 patients were randomly allocated to receive either furosemide for 6‐10 days followed by a 7‐day period with placebo (3/10 patients) or no treatment (7/10 patients), or vice versa. The other 6 infants were included in a non randomized trial of furosemide, without control period. Data on randomized patients were not separately reported in a way permitting us to extract them.
The authors do not provide data to assess whether the two groups of patients significantly differ in baseline parameters or in variables measured during furosemide administration. |

This short‐term study includes random allocation of diuretics in premature infants with lung disease, however it does not provide any information on the outcome variables selected for this systematic review. |
Segar 1997 |
This short‐term study includes random allocation either to furosemide and metolazone, or to furosemide only. This study will be discussed in a related review on diuretics acting on the distal segments of the renal tubule. |
