Prospective, controlled, randomized, open, single centre study. |
Participants |
All patients admitted to the hospital ICU with serum albumin less than or equal to 30g/L/. Exclusion criteria were expected length of stay <72 hrs., life expectancy <3 months or a do not resuscitate order, albumin administration in the preceding 24 hrs. or evidence of fluid overload. |
Interventions |
1) Intervention (n=50) received 300 mL of 20% albumin solution on day 1 and 200 mL on subsequent days when serum albumin concentration was lower than 31 g/L.
2) Control (n=50) received Ringer's Lactate. |
Outcomes |
Effect of albumin on organ function as assessed by a delta Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score. Deaths not reported. |
