Total selection (S) on Ipomoea purpurea flowering time in a complex (autoclave + inoculum) and simple (autoclave) soil microbial community. Shown is the relationship between relative fitness and flowering day for each plant, and the line shows the calculated selection differential. Flowering day is standardized to a mean of zero and a variance of one. The negative slope indicates that plants that flower earlier have a higher relative fitness. The steeper slope in the complex soil microbial community indicates selection on flowering day was stronger compared to the simple soil microbial community.
