Table 1. Environmental variables measured over a native V. pubescens population (n1 = 10 plots) during spring and summer of 2016 and 2017 in Sells Park, Athens County, Ohio.

Environmental variables were averaged prior to calculating summary statistics.

For light quantity and soil moisture, five measurements were taken per plot at each measurement date. Data were grouped by year, date, and plot and then averaged. Temperature was measured every day at 15-minute (2016) and 1-hour (2017) intervals, and data were also grouped by year, date, and plot before averaging. Thus, for these variables, values above reflect the min, max, mean and std. dev. calculated on the weekly averages across all plots and measurement dates. Canopy cover values (3 per measurement date) measured over the entire population were grouped by year/date and averaged. Single, daily photoperiod values were extracted from the nearest weather station for each measurement date, and one soil sample was collected per plot/measurement date. Canopy cover data were therefore grouped by year and date and soil pH data by year, date, and plot, but data were not averaged. Note that this table provides summary statistics for the averaged environmental data but does not reflect the data structure used as input for modeling (see Methods). n2 = number of weekly averages.
