Sugar stimulates the closure of citrus fruit stomata. The stomatal response to sucrose in WT fruit rind was assayed with rind discs (taken from six fruits) that were immersed for 2.5 h in artificial xylem sap (Wilkinson and Davies, 1997), artificial xylem sap containing 200 mM sorbitol (as an osmotic control), 100 mM sucrose (Suc), and 200 mM Suc. Epidermal imprints were then taken and the apertures of 60 stomata from each treatment were measured. Data are displayed as means ± SE. Asterisks denote significant differences relative to the WT (t-test, P < 0.01).
