Neutrophil functionality. Neutrophil phagocytosis (ac) and neutrophil phagosomal acidification (df) in patients who developed an infection (red square) and patients who did not develop an infection (green circle) after 60 min of incubation with S. aureus bioparticles. Patients developed these infections between day 4 and day 9. Patients with infections were compared to patients without infections with generalized estimating equations (Fig. 2a, d). Additionally, patients were compared to healthy control values using a Mann-Whitney U test (Fig. 2b, c and Fig. 2e, f). Data are presented as mean with the standard error of the mean.
