Macrostructure of the growth cone. Image shows an adult murine sensory neuron (left) in culture for 24 h. The neuron is stained with Rhodamine, Phalloidin anti-tubulin-βIII, and DAPI to identify filamentous actin (red), neuronal microtubules (green), and the nucleus, respectively. The growth cone (right-corner) is localized at the most distal part of growing neurites and axon. The growth cone is a motile and highly sensitive structure, and two parts characterize its morphology: a broad scattered and flattened structure called lamellipodium, and an extension of sharp-edged peaks called filopodium.
