S-nitrosylation in mitochondria. Based on the similarities between NO generation in E. coli and mitochondria, a hypothetical SNO-cascade is shown where under hypoxic conditions NO is produced from nitrite by the respiratory chain. Metal-bound proteins can serve as potential SNO-synthases to S-nitrosylate specific mitochondrial proteins, leading to regulation of downstream metabolic processes.
