(A) A simplified cartoon of the HTLV-1 RNA genome is shown. −1 PRF sites (starred) are used for the translation of the pro and pol open reading frames, which are in the −1 and −2 reading frames relative to gag, respectively. (B) The HTLV-1 pro-pol frameshift site includes a slippery sequence (underlined), a spacer (nucleotides 2246–2251), and a downstream structure, which was proposed to be an H-type pseudoknot. The nucleotide numbering is derived from the NCBI reference sequence NC_001436.1.
