Among adults aged ≥18 who fail treatment for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), 18.1% die within the next 30 days compared with 4.6% of nontreatment failures (P < .0001). Among the elderly (ie, ≥65 years), 24.3% of patients with CAP who fail treatment die within the subsequent 30 days compared with 7.3% of nontreatment failures (P < .0001).
