MreB monomers first polymerize into single protofilaments. Next, two antiparallel single protofilaments assemble into a double protofilament, with membrane-binding domains on the same side of the double protofilament5. Inside bacterial cells, short-MreB filaments bind the inner face of the plasma membrane, align approximately circumferentially, and rotate around the long cell axis to guide cell-wall insertion and to determine rod-like shape and size.
