A hair bundle's response to sinusoidal mechanical stimuli differed greatly depending on the presence and level of efferent modulation (stimulus: 1 ms “on,” 10 ms “off”). The bundle visibly phase-locked with the mechanical stimulus in the top and bottom traces. This characteristic is lost with the introduction of efferent stimulation. All four traces were recorded from the same hair bundle. The scale bars are applicable to both the bundle traces (black) and the stimulus (red).
