Acidosis was induced with NH₄Cl (AmCl), as described in the Materials and Methods section. To induce acidosis, there was a brief Na-free treatment between AmCl and NaCl. NaCl indicates the recovery period from acidosis in a medium that contains NaCl. For clarity, only the recovery period is shown from the NHE1 mutant proteins. (B) is a summary of the raw activity results (mean ± S.E., n > 6).
