Methods	Regional anaesthesia added to general anaesthesia versus general anaesthesia
Participants	42 males undergoing uncomplicated aortic replacement of an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm
Interventions	General inhalational anaesthesia with fentanyl, nitrous oxide, enflurane and pancuronium bromide for all participants with or after the surgery Thoracic epidural analgesia (n = 22): at T9‐T10 or T10‐T11 loaded with bupivacaine for a sensory level of T4 and epidural morphine for at least 48 hours postoperatively Morphine IV PCA (n = 20)
Outcomes	Mortality in hospital taken as zero to 30 days
