Taxonomy of highly abundant features (>1%) is included. The central micrograph shows the natural microbial community within the biofilm after staining with the LIVE/DEAD bacterial viability kit in combination with calcofluor white (0.15%). Blue: algal cell wall (cellulose, chitin), green: viable bacterial cells, red: dead bacteria.
