The red lines mark the four major acoustic events that occur in these stimuli: the onset of the initial consonants, the onset of the first vowels, the onset of the second consonant, and the onset of the second vowel. The light red stripe marks the time period containing the responses evoked by the onset of the first vowel, used to quantify the responses to the vowels and the resulting SSA in Figs 4–6. Thus, time 0 in Fig 5 corresponds to the 2nd red line displayed here.
