Experimental schema. Bedding mixing among cages of similar rat strains (Lewis [LE] and Sprague-Dawley [SD]) was carried out for 2 weeks. Thereafter, rats were divided into cohoused and non-cohoused groups for 4 weeks, followed by carotid angioplasty and then sacrifice at either 3 or 14 days post-angioplasty. Bedding mixing was also carried out within housing groups during this time. Stool samples were collected at time points designated on the left.
