Study setting: Hospital and outpatient clinic n = 100 males mean age = 38 years Eligibility criteria: male, 22‐58 years, history of heroin dependence for at least 4 years and at least one previous treatment, current heroin dependence by three consecutive positive urine samples, voluntary application for admission (criminal justice referrals excluded), resident with fixed address, absence of past or present major psychiatric or medical illness. |

Interventions | Treatment: methadone maintenance ‐ flexible dose (average 97 mg / day). Control: detoxification from 60mg methadone at 1mg/day for 60 days, placebo thereafter. | |
