Multiple sequence alignment for the spike proteins of 7 known human coronaviruses. 2019-nCoV (QHD43416.1), SARS-CoV (P59594), MERS-CoV (YP_009047204.1), HCoV-NL63 (YP_003767.1), HCoV-229E (NP_073551.1), HCoV-OC43 (YP_009555241.1) and HCoV-HKU1 (YP_173238.1) sequences are downloaded from the NCBI and UniProt databases. RaTG13 (QHR63300.1) and RsSHC014 (AGZ48806.1), the two bat coronaviruses thought to be the ancestors of 2019-nCoV and SARS-CoV, are also included. For brevity, only the regions near the four “insertions” are displayed in the figure.
