Diagram of the RHI task. Before stroking, participants were asked to state the number on a ruler indicating the position of their hidden right hand (the index finger). The rubber hand was visible during stroking. After stroking, the ruler was positioned again in front of the participants with a different onset number and they were asked to state the number indicating the position of the right index finger. The difference between the two proprioceptive judgments (final – baseline) was defined as a measure of the proprioceptive drift. Typically, there is a drift in the perceived position of one’s own hand toward the rubber hand after synchronous stroking. Finally, the participants were asked to state their degree of agreement or disagreement with the statement related solely to the illusory feeling of ownership.
