Nebulin in the skeletal muscle sarcomere. The structure and major components of the skeletal muscle sarcomere are illustrated. For the purpose of this illustration, it was assumed that two nebulin molecules (shown in red) are incorporated in each skeletal muscle thin filament. Nebulin’s C-terminus is anchored in the Z-disk (from M182; Millevoi et al. 1998) and interacts with the thin filament capping protein CapZ. Nebulin then extends alongside the thin filament towards the center of the sarcomere. The N-terminus of nebulin localises close to the thin filament pointed end, leaving the last ~ 0.1–0.3 µm of the thin filament nebulin free (see inset). (Color figure online)
