Schematic of memory tasks in Experiment 2. Sample trials of the vigilance-intrusion task are presented in panel A. In each trial, a digit was centrally presented. Participants were instructed to press the GO key every time they saw a digit that was not ‘3,’ and to press the Intrusion key whenever they experienced an intrusive memory of the film. This task is also used in Experiment 3 albeit with slight modifications. A sample trial of the attentional-capture task is presented in panel B. Participants were presented with a film-foil still pair, which quickly disappeared and was followed by a dot probe behind the original location of either still. Participants were instructed to judge the identity of the dot probe (i.e., one or two dots) as accurately and as quickly as possible. Pictures are for illustration only and thus not to scale. Stimuli in the experiment were in color (not black-and-white).
