Examples of the 3 commonly observed patterns of binaural interaction. AC: units sensitive mainly to ILD. DF: units sensitive predominantly to ABL. GI: units with nonmonotonic responses in both ILD and ABL. As in Fig. 2, the gray scale indicates the mean evoked spike rate per stimulus presentation. Negative rates are sound level combinations for which the evoked spike rate was below spontaneous levels. To aid visualization, response surfaces have been smoothed by low-pass filtering in the manner illustrated by Fig. 2.
