The upper left hand image shows a surface template. The right hand image shows an example of a simulated surface, as described in the text, with parameters c = 0.3 (midline curvature), h = 0.6 (spatial correlation range) and vr = 0.02 (variance). The true midline curve is shown in black, while the estimates produced by the direct and template methods are shown in blue and red respectively. In both of the images, the landmarks are shown in green. The lower plot show the performance of the direct and template methods in terms of the average distance between the true midline curve and the estimates, for a variety of different simulation settings.
