a, 2D classes fall into two broad groups: neutral-pH-like and extended-intermediate-like. Representative classes are shown for each group for each time point, with the percentages indicating the overall numbers of particles that fall into these two broad groups. There is a general trend towards increasing numbers of extended-intermediate-like classes as the time point increases, with a decrease in numbers of neutral-pH-like classes. There is limited diversity in the orientations seen for the 10 s extended-intermediate-like and the 60 s neutral-pH-like classes. b, Representative micrographs (scale bars, 50 nm).
