Model mechanism underlying sex regulation under starvation and feeding conditions. Under starvation conditions, fatty acid synthesis is downregulated through the suppression of pantothenate metabolism. Depletion of lipids causes ectopic dmrt1 expression in XX somatic cells, which causes the genetic female (XX) to develop into a functional male. Conversely, under normal feeding conditions, XX larvae may suppress dmrt1 expression through lipids.
