Methods Randomised controlled study of patients in the treatment arm stimulated with levels that were thought to be therapeutic, whereas those in the placebo arm received VNS at levels that were thought to be sub‐therapeutic.
Participants The study population consisted of patients with refractory epilepsy.
Interventions VNS therapy: comparison of high (therapeutic) and low (sub‐therapeutic) stimulation frequency.
Outcomes Efficacy was evaluated as reduction in seizure frequency.
There was a 28% reduction in seizure frequency in the treatment arm and a 15% reduction in the placebo arm after 3 months of treatment.
