Effect of SUMO on type I IFN response. Activation of STAT1 in response to IFN is downmodulated by SUMO conjugation. However, SUMO does not alter the IFNα signaling, likely because STAT2 is not affected by SUMO and it can compensate for the reduction in STAT1 phosphorylation [16–20]. Conjugation of SUMO to p53, PML, and MxA promotes their antiviral activities. The regulation of the antiviral activity of PKR by SUMO may depend on the SUMO isoform [21–23]
