TABLE 48.1.
Representative viruses and viral binding receptors
Virus | Cell surface receptora |
---|---|
Influenza | Glycophorin A |
Rhinovirus | Adhesion molecule ICAM-1 |
Reovirus | β-adrenergic hormone receptor |
Rabies | Acetylcholine receptor |
Vaccinia | Epidermal growth factor receptor |
Epstein-Bar | B cell complement receptor |
HIV | T cell, macrophage CD4 receptor |
All viruses need to bind to a specific cell surface molecule in order to enter into the cell. The binding can be blocked by antibody, but there are cases in which the antibody helps the virus to get in.
