Simian virus 40 (SV40).
SV40 causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalomalacia (PML) (A through D) in SIV-infected macaques characterized by demyelinization and gliosis within white matter tracts. Virus may be demonstrated by in situ hybridization (C) or immunohistochemistry and intranuclear inclusions may be observed in oligodendrocytes (D). SV40 may also cause an interstitial nephritis (E) and pneumonitis.
