Coordination of Mg²⁺ ions by azole-substituted pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidines (A) and 1,6-naphthyridines (B) of HIV-1 integrase. In the 1,2,4-oxadiazole (C) the nitrogens lone electron pair is missing, preventing coordination by a second Mg²⁺ ion. IC₅₀ values were determined by using a recombinant HIV-1 integrase strand transfer assay.
