An annular bowel lesion or region of hypomotility (shaded area) can lead to intussusception when the adjacent contracted segment produces a kink at the border between normal and abnormal tissue (labeled A). The advancing wave of peristalsis drives the proximal segment into the lesional area creating an intussusception.
