Metabolism of dimethylsulfoniopropionate by R. pomeroyi and R. lacuscaerulensis chemostat cultures. Cultures were grown on minimal medium supplemented with 2 mM glucose. At time zero, DMSP in the reservoir was increased to 100 μM for an addition rate of 10 nmol min−1. After 4 days, the DMSP in the reservoir was increased to 5 mM for an addition rate of 500 nmol min−1 (indicated by the broken vertical line). The scale of the y axis for the outflow DMSP plot has been broken (diagonal lines) to show both the low and high values. Additional measurements are reported in Table 1.
