A, Degenerate neutrophils are surrounded by dark yellow to black amorphous bile material that is free in the background. (Wright-Giemsa; HP oil.) B, Large numbers of mostly nondegenerate neutrophils accompany the presence of amorphous material. The basophilic bile material is coated by stain precipitate producing a pink, granular appearance. This greenish, flocculent fluid had a protein level of 3.0 g/dL and an estimated nucleated cell count of greater than 60,000/μL. (Wright-Giemsa; HP oil.)
