Abdominocentesis can be performed with the use of an 18-20 gauge needle inserted cranial and to the right/left of the umbilicus, and caudal and to the right/left of the umbilicus. When the needle is inserted, it should be twisted while penetrating into the abdominal cavity, to prevent iatrogenic puncture of hollow organs. In some cases it may be necessary to place more than one needle before fluid will flow from the needle hub. Appropriate locations are marked on the skin with an "X."
