BILIARY ATRESIA VERSUS NEONATAL HEPATITIS

IMAGING STUDY BILIARY ATRESIA NEONATAL HEPATITIS OTHER DISORDERS OF INTEREST
Ultrasound Nonvisualization of gallbladder, common bile duct Normal gallbladder and common bile duct; echogenic liver Choledochal cyst would show dilation of bile ducts.
DISIDA scan Good or delayed uptake without excretion into the bowel Delayed uptake of trace with some excretion into the bowel Spontaneous rupture of biliary tree would show bile leak.
Liver biopsy Proliferation of the bile ducts, bile plugs in the ducts, fibrosis of portal tracts or hepatocytes, cirrhosis Inflammation of the hepatic parenchyma, cholestasis, possible giant cell transformation, hepatic acini (rosettes), variable inflammation PFICs would show chronic cholestasis without ductular proliferation, cirrhosis, variable portal fibrosis and giant cell transformation

PFIC, Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis
