Clinical features of HL/NHL

HL NHL
Incidence 2.4 per 1 00 000 annually 8.2 per 1 00 000; more common in individuals with AIDS
Age 2 peaks: early adulthood and again later in the elderly
  • Classically seen in the elderly

  • More common in younger age groups since the advent of HIV/AIDS

Symptoms/signs
  • Lymphadenopathy
    • spread is contiguous
    • in early disease, the nodes may fluctuate in size
    • ± alcohol related pain
  • Hepatosplenomegaly

  • General malaise

  • Severe itching

  • Herpes zoster (marker of depression of cell-mediated immunity)

  • Lymphadenopathy
    • spread is not contiguous
    • often presents as disseminated disease
    • predilection for the GIT and CNS
  • High grade disease results in fever, anorexia, weight loss

  • Nodal pressure/extranodal disease may result in:
    • superior vena cava obstruction
    • abdominal obstruction
    • back pain
    • bone pain
    • ±
      signs of autoimmune haemolysis
