C5–C6
  • Paraplegia

  • Hands paralysed

  • Arms paralysed except for abduction and flexion

C6–C7
  • Paraplegia

  • Hands, but not arms, paralysed

T1
  • Paraplegia

  • Normal hand function

  • Patients can perform all functions of a non-injured person, with the exception of standing and walking

T2–T5
  • Paraplegia

  • Patients have partial trunk movement and may be able to stand, with long leg braces and a walker, and may be able to walk short distances with assistance

T6–T12
  • Paraplegia

  • Patients have partial abdominal muscle strength, and may be able to walk independently for short distances with long leg braces and a walker or crutches

T11–T12
  • Paraplegia

  • Sensory loss T12 and below

T12–L1 Legs paralysed below knees

L2 Patients have all movement in the trunk and hips

L3 Patients have knee extension

L4 Patients have ankle dorsification

L5 Patients have extensor hallucis longus function. They are able to walk independently with ankle braces and canes, and may use wheelchairs only for long distances

S1–S2 Patients have function of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles and walk independently on all surfaces, usually without bracing
