Alternative models. (A) A stripe-only model correctly predicts wild-type patterns, but not mutant or lattice-like morphologies. (B) A dot-hole model produces joints of the wrong shape, but connected to one another in the right topology, for both wild-type and lattice-like patterns. (C) A combination of dot- and stripe-forming systems ensures joints form with the correct topology and shape.
