Targeting circulating monocytes and their reservoirs. Approaches depleting myocardial monocyte populations following AMI have focused on various stages of their trafficking upstream. (A) Depletion of all circulating monocytes (e.g. clodronate-loaded liposomes). (B) Inhibition of monocyte entry into the myocardium (e.g. Ccr2^neg/neg). (C) Inhibition of monocyte release from the bone marrow (e.g. Ccr2^neg/neg). (D) Depletion of the splenic reservoir or inhibition of splenic release (e.g. splenectomy, Agt1ar antagonism).
