The ratio of the firing rate for binocular input during the binocular phase and the sum of the corresponding monocular rates is plotted against the sum of the monocular spiking rates. B: fluctuations drive the spiking. The firing rate of the cell goes to 0 when the fluctuations in the excitatory inputs are reduced by increasing the rates of the Poisson trains by a factor F, while keeping the mean current fixed.
